Context Rot Is Real — And Bigger Windows Won't Save You

The Evidence

In December 2025, the ContextBranch paper demonstrated what developers already knew from experience: LLMs degrade as context grows. Their research showed 58.1% context reduction through branching strategies — and with that reduction came dramatically better task completion.

The GCC paper went further, showing 3.5× improvement in task success rates when agents could roll back and retry from checkpoints.

Why More Tokens ≠ Better Thinking

A 200K token context window sounds impressive. But consider:

  • At 60% utilization (120K tokens), reasoning quality is already degrading
  • At 80% utilization (160K tokens), the AI is essentially confused
  • At 100% utilization, the AI may drop critical instructions entirely

More tokens don't make the AI smarter at 150K. They just give it more room to accumulate noise before hitting the hard degradation point.
